December 2022: Janayia Capers

Growing up, Janayia Capers saw the effect that crime has on communities, and was very aware of racial inequalities, especially in the criminal justice system.  She chose to major in Sociology to learn more about how to address such issues.

For her minor in Social Justice, Janayia did an internship with PeacePrints of WNY, a re-entry program for the formerly incarcerated.  Janayia helped clients find housing, since homelessness is a leading cause of recidivism.  However, as Janayia observed, the problem faced by her clients was not that apartments weren’t available, but that landlords often refused to rent to people with a criminal record.

Thanks for working for social justice, Janayia, and best of luck after graduation!
