VERSION: March 31, 2026
This statement outlines the Department of Art’s policy on the use of generative AI tools in academic and artistic work. This policy shall be accepted in concert with and does not supersede University at Buffalo and Office of Academic Integrity policies.
Large language generative artificial intelligence systems, including but not limited to ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini may be utilized with acknowledgement to engage in preliminary research, gather background information on research topics, and to gain inspiration for critical and artistic work.
As with existing departmental and university policies, all work submitted should be the authentic and original creation of the student and not created by or created with the assistance of another person or program. The use of generative AI programs to create or complete academic writing or artistic projects and/or the use of such programs as substitute for authentic research and citation is prohibited. Such use of generative AI systems will constitute academic dishonesty and will be referred to the Office of Academic Integrity.
Any exceptions to this policy will be clearly stated by course instructors and academic advisors for specific assignments. Any exceptions shall be understood to refer to specific assignments and should not be applied in other courses or academic contexts.
As a general rule, AI systems should not be used to access or share private or sensitive data. All information gathered via AI systems should be evaluated for accuracy, and the sources of information should be clearly ascertained.
