What do Earth scientists do?

Earth Scientists study the processes that shape the planet and apply that knowledge to real-world challenges. Depending on their role, they may:

  • Analyze soil, rock and water samples
  • Map geological features and subsurface structures
  • Use geophysical tools to study Earth’s interior
  • Model environmental systems and climate patterns
  • Assess natural hazards and environmental risks
  • Communicate scientific findings to policymakers or the public

Their work can support environmental protection, resource management and infrastructure planning.

Career outcomes

An understanding of earth systems is critical in today’s world. With growing challenges in energy, natural resources, and environmental health, geoscientists are in high demand, with excellent job prospects according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Graduates in Earth Sciences pursue careers such as:

  • Environmental consultant
  • Exploration Geophysicist
  • Geologist
  • Geographic information system spatial analyst
  • Graduate school for an advance degree
  • Hydrogeologist
  • Oceanographer
  • Oil and Gas Technician
  • Science teacher
  • Technician with Bureau of Land Management (BLM) or U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)

Skills you'll build at UB

Through coursework, labs and field experiences, Earth Sciences students develop skills such as:

  • Field data collection and interpretation
  • Laboratory analysis of geological materials
  • Quantitative reasoning and problem solving
  • Geographic information systems and spatial analysis
  • Scientific writing and public communication
  • Critical thinking and evidence-based decision making
