Want to get involved in research at UB but not sure where (or how) to start? These workshops are made for students just like you. Maybe you’ve got a great idea. Maybe you don’t even know what to ask yet. Either way, this is your launch pad.
Get the most from your workshop with a bit of prep—chances are, you’ve already done most of it.
Undergraduate research isn’t just an extra class project or something only science majors do. It’s about diving deep into big questions, solving real-world problems, and actually contributing to your field—yes, even as an undergrad.
At UB, that means going beyond the textbook. You won’t just study discoveries—you’ll help make them.
Official definition from the Council on Undergraduate Research:
“An inquiry or investigation conducted by an undergraduate student that makes an original intellectual or creative contribution to the discipline.”
Translation? It’s your chance to do what real researchers do—whether that’s in a lab, a studio, a library, or out in the world.
Research isn’t one-size-fits-all. It happens in every field:
🎠Arts
Film, music, dance, visual art, design—explore and create work that pushes boundaries and helps us understand the world in new ways.
📚 Humanities
Ask the big questions. Study history, literature, languages and philosophy to uncover insights about who we are and where we’ve come from.
🔬 Natural Sciences & Math
Whether you’re experimenting in a lab or analyzing climate data, you’ll be part of research that helps shape medicine, tech and our understanding of the universe.
🧠Social Sciences
Study human behavior, society, politics and culture using tools like surveys, interviews and observations. Learn how people live, think and interact.
Wherever your passion lies, research gives you the tools to ask questions, think critically and do meaningful work.
UB is an R1 university—this means we’re in the top tier of research institutions in the U.S. What does that mean for you?
Research is central. Professors aren’t just teaching from books—they’re writing them, leading studies, and breaking new ground.
You can get involved now. R1 status means more grants, more labs, more projects, and more opportunities for students—undergrad students—to get involved.
You’ll learn from leaders. You’re working with people who are literally shaping their fields.
It’s a mark of excellence. Grad schools and employers recognize R1 schools as places of innovation and high standards. You’re in good company.
We’ll walk through this during the workshop, but here’s a sneak peek:
Don’t stress if you don’t have it all figured out. This workshop is here to help you start. Bring a question, an idea, or just an open mind. Now register! 👇
