Events
Throughout the year, HI hosts free and open-to-the-public events, on- and off-campus. Some programs are specifically programmed to be community-forward, with future expansions into additional programming and opportunities on the horizon.
A monthly lecture series featuring the UB Humanities Institute’s Faculty Fellows for the current academic year, hosted at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center.
Held annually in mid- to late-September, the Buffalo Humanities Festival is a multiday event organized in collaboration with WNY university partners Canisius, Niagara, and SUNY Buffalo State; with the support of Humanities New York.
In collaboration with colleagues conducting research in various disciplines at the University at Buffalo, HI hosts an annual gathering of notable national (and international) scholars in conversation with UB faculty and graduate students, framed through the lens of the humanities to address timely topics of concern.
The New Faculty Seminar Series features the work of new colleagues in the Humanities at UB. Each session provides the new faculty member with the opportunity to share their current research in a casual, convivial space with discussion/Q+A following.
UB HI organizes grant writing workshops designed to assist faculty and graduate students applying for humanities-based grant and fellowship opportunities outside of UB by learning grant writing strategies from a featured guest speaker. The faculty workshop includes exchanging drafts and ideas with other grant seekers for peer feedback.
Each Spring, HI hosts the New Books Celebration to celebrate the recent publications by UB faculty whose work has been supported by the research funding programs offered by the Humanities Institute, a unit of the College of Arts and Sciences and additionally funded by the UB Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development (OVPRED).
The Humanities Institute’s Research Workshops bring together UB faculty and graduate students from diverse disciplines to present research and to explore topics of common intellectual concern. HI provides funding for the workshops to sponsor guest lectures, works-in-progress seminars, and conferences.
