Graduate Student Programs

Offering support programs for UB graduate students pursuing advanced degrees in the humanities or humanities-adjacent areas of study, HI provides a variety of funding opportunities for scholarship both on- and off-campus.

The following programs are currently closed to new applications for the 2024-25 academic year. Information regarding application requirements is provided for reference. Please check back for updates for 2025-26 application periods which will be announced during the Fall 2024 semester.

  • Humanities Institute Advanced PhD Fellowships
    7/23/24
    The Humanities Institute awards two $12,000 PhD Fellowships per academic year. Fellows meet for works-in-progress seminars to gain interdisciplinary perspectives on their research.
  • Judith B. Kerman Graduate Fellow in Technology and the Humanities
    7/23/24
    The Judith B. Kerman Graduate Fellowship has been established to explore the influence of technological change on the ways humans live and think. The Humanities Institute will award one $6,000 fellowship to a graduate student engaged in humanities-based research that examines the impact of new technologies in different societies and historical periods including our own. 
  • Humanities Centers Initiative Public Humanities Grant

    The Public Humanities Grant offers support for humanities graduate students as they explore the public application of their scholarly interests. Each Grantee designs and implements a public humanities project in collaboration with a community-based partner.
  • Futures of American Studies Institute Grants
    7/23/24
    The Humanities Institute provides support for at least two PhD students to attend the Futures of American Studies Institute at Dartmouth College, held annually in June.
