The Translation Zone: Asian Languages

This workshop, which takes its name from translation theorist Emily Apter’s 2006 monograph, will focus on UB faculty and student projects concerning a combination of creative and theoretical work in translation as well as understanding the intersections between translation and other disciplines for scholarly learning and conversation.

Our members will work on short and long translation projects for poetry, short and long fiction, and non-fiction prose from Asian languages into English, including languages from the Middle East and East, South, and Southeast Asia. Our meetings will be an opportunity to discuss ongoing translation work with which the members are involved and to grapple with the technical-political issues which accompany such work. In addition, we aim to invite scholars working on Asian Studies and translation within the United States to foster a community of scholars working on similar concerns in translation and language.
