Sustained Echoes: A Multimedia Art Installation at CEPA Gallery

Confronting Technology, Division, and Media Spectacles through Interactive Art

Buffalo, NY – How do media artists confront the rising tides of automated technologies, biased algorithms, and data mining? How can we connect with each other when the people in power depend on our division? How do we minimize distractions brought on by corporate media spectacles to feel solidarity in our struggles?

In Sustained Echoes, five multimedia artists come together to create a domestic living space in which they embody technology to unearth their shared roots in the CEPA underground gallery. Despite their differing creative practices, they are united by a shared disillusionment with the postmodern condition. Through this interactive and multi-sensory group installation, material memories are revitalized and sustained by disempowering modern technology.

Featured Works and Artists

  • James Pardue presents a deconstructed CRT TV interactive system where visitors' sounds are processed into data and projected onto the wall, challenging the control dynamic between humans and both obsolete and emerging technology.

  • Dana Hunt-Locklear creates an affective experience through play, transporting visitors to an early 2000s child’s bedroom with a Disney-branded CRT TV and significant Indigenous cultural symbols, juxtaposing mainstream American media narratives with authentic Indigenous representations.

  • Daphne Pugliese visualizes labor exploitation and commodity fetishism through handmade personifications of historical workers in the living room space.

  • Jamie Hager explores the commodification of media consumption through mining consumer data with interactive videos featuring a three-act structure.

  • Ashley Manigo ties the exhibit together with an experimental video that visually represents inner ruminations on melancholy and malaise, echoing the collective hope for sustained community empowerment.

About the Exhibition
