Zodiaque Dance Company has become a source of inspiration over the last five decades because it embodies creative momentum, physicalizes the essence of hope, and is energized by the process of sharing. The vision of Zodiaque is to enrich both the university and larger Buffalo communities through dance. Zodiaque Dance Company, named by founding director Linda Swiniuch in 1974, reflects the many directions the company’s performances take. Zodiaque also implies “celestial bodies” - which refers to the dancers themselves. They are the future stars that light up our stage as they work to attain those lofty dreams of becoming impactful performers, educators, and choreographers. Zodiaque is aspirational in its name and holds true to the versatility seen on stage with each concert. I am honored to carry on the tradition of excellence established by Linda Swiniuch and Tom Ralabate, excited for the future of Zodiaque, and proud to be involved in the development of the next generation of performers, designers, choreographers, teachers, and scholars, who will make an impact in the field of dance. We acknowledge the loyal support and dedication of our alums, donors and administrators which allows UB Dance to maintain our commitment to artistic and academic excellence. We honor Zodiaque’s 50 years of success by leaning into the future with motivation and confidence. Enjoy Celebration 50!
Kerry Ring
Artistic Director
Looking at the legacy Zodiaque Dance Company has created over the past 50 years, I am struck not only by the immense talent possessed by decades of students (onstage, backstage, and in the booth), but also by the varied paths they have taken post-graduation. This company truly represents and embodies UB Dance’s motto, “Versatility Matters,” both in the works that will be presented onstage tonight, and in the achievements of our hundreds of notable alumni. Reflecting on the words of the alumni we have been in contact with in preparation for Celebration 50, I am inspired by the many ways Zodiaque’s pre-professional training has helped shape the careers and lives of its former members. As a Zodiaque alumnus, I am proud to count myself among their number, and now as a Zodiaque director, I am honored to continue the tradition established by those who came before. With the continued support of alumni, faculty, donors, administrators, and audiences like you, Zodiaque Dance Company will remain not just an artistic resource for the community, but a training ground for the next generations of artists and practitioners as we look to the future. Thank you for supporting and joining us for Celebration 50 - we hope you enjoy the performance!
Michael Deeb Weaver
Associate Artistic Director
For over twenty years, I have had the privilege of working with emerging designers, technicians, and managers as they collaborate with the Zodiaque Dance Company. These technical production students have gone on to make their name in live event industries from coast to coast, and across the globe. Gala years hold space for these talented alums to share their artistry in the anniversary concert, and the opportunity for current students to learn from their expertise. In the making of Celebration 50, UB alums in costume design, lighting design, lighting technology, technical direction, and graphic design have worked alongside current UB Theatre Design and Technology students, faculty and staff to add visual variety to the concert you will experience tonight. Their collective efforts and dedication not only honor the legacy of the Zodiaque Dance Company but also inspire the next generation of artists and technicians. We hope you enjoy this evening’s performance, a true testament to the vibrant and enduring spirit of our community.

Through My Roots represents my journey of jazz dance. The music has greatly influenced the choreography from my Latin heritage, to exploring the world of concert dance and my time as a dancer for the place I call home, Giordano Dance Chicago. A pivotal moment was letting go of the adversities that challenged me - to stay true to my path and let it be. This piece is an homage to jazz dance and those who have helped shaped my voice as a dance artist.

There are a great deal of quotes, literary references, and personal mantras on the topic of journeys. There are equally as many about the pathways we take and the roads we travel while journeying. I suppose this dance could touch on any number of those to make it meaningful for anyone who sees it. My personal interest in creating this work was to explore a bit of the give and take that occurs when our own journeys intersect with others’. A little empathy can go a long way. But when we ask for more than we give, the song created by those intersections might end sooner than we’d expected or hoped.

This piece is based on and inspired by the movement of dance pioneer Luigi, UB Dance Professor Emeritus Tom Ralabate, and the vogue and ballroom community. Luigi first presented “Vogue” at the inaugural Jazz Dance World Congress in 1992. Since then, the combination has been taught as an étude to the advanced level jazz classes at UB, passed on through generations of UB dancers under the watchful eye of Mr. Tom. It is my honor to continue this tradition, and to elaborate on the work of those who came before me.
Our piece is dedicated to the generation of artists who were lost during the AIDS crisis of the 1980s and 1990s, many of whom would still be alive and making art today if not for this disease. Through movement, we express joy in celebration of their memory.
“What is remembered, lives.”

Catherine F. Norgren (Costume Designer: Ralabate/Hibbert) Professor of Theatre | Incredibly, Cathy has been at UB for almost 40 of Zodiaque’s 50 years. Some non-dance highlights between “Bolero” and “Many Hearts” are conferred membership in United Scenic Artists, local 829; 20 years of engagement with The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (https://www.kennedy-center.org/education/opportunities-for-artists/preprofessional-artist-training/kcactf/regional-festivals/) as regional chair, national chair, and co-creator (with Gary Garrison) of the National 10-Minute Play Festival; her work with The Kennedy Center Playwriting Intensives; costume design credits at a range of venues including Actors Theatre of Louisville Humana Festival, Studio Arena Theatre Buffalo, North Carolina Shakespeare Festival; and ten years as senior associate dean in UB’s College of Arts and Sciences. Presented to
Lindsay Guarino
And
Cesar G. Salinas
This Award recognizes significant impact on dance as an art form, through the demonstration of artistic excellence in performance, education, and/or choreography.
Lindsay Guarino is a jazz dance artist, educator and scholar. As professor and chair of Music, Theatre and Dance at Salve Regina University in Newport, RI, she has been on the faculty since 2006 and has grown the dance program from a minor to a vibrant B.A. focused on jazz and justice. She directs Salve’s dance company and seeks to honor jazz and its creative spirit by presenting works that are rooted and uphold the communal values of the jazz language. Lindsay’s creative and scholarly research lives at the intersection of jazz history, Africanist aesthetics and pedagogy. She edited the volumes Jazz Dance: A History of the Roots and Branches (2014) with Wendy Oliver and the award-winning Rooted Jazz Dance: Africanist Aesthetics and Equity in the Twenty-First Century (2022) with Carlos R. A. Jones and Oliver, both published by University Press of Florida. Jazz Dance: A History of the Roots and Branches inspired the documentary Uprooted: The Journey of Jazz Dance (Khadifa Wong, 2020), which Lindsay consulted on and appears in.
Cesar G. Salinas (‘06), originally from Portland, Oregon, is Giordano Dance Chicago’s Associate Artistic Director. This year marks Cesar’s 10th season in an artistic administrative role previously serving as artistic assistant and artistic programs manager. He began his formal studies in dance with Zohar School of Dance, under the direction of Ehud Krauss in Palo Alto, CA. There he was introduced to the classic jazz styles of Gus Giordano, Luigi, and Matt Mattox. He moved to Oregon where he studied at Willamette Ballet Academy under Deborah Higginbotham. Cesar went on to further his training at the University at Buffalo, where he graduated with a BFA in Dance. Twenty years ago, he received a scholarship to the original Giordano Dance School in Evanston, IL, in 2004 and in the summer of 2005. From 2006 until 2011, Cesar joined Giordano Dance Chicago as a full company member performing throughout the United States and Europe. During his tenure, he was proud to be a part of GDC’s educational outreach pilot program, teaching science and health dance classes to 4th and 5th grade students in under-resourced public schools in Chicago. Cesar was honored to be on the cover of Dance Magazine (August 2007) and to teach at the Jazz Dance World Congress in 2007, 2009, and 2012. In 2013, he was chosen as a soloist for BalaSole Dance Company performing “Hunted” in New York City’s Alvin Ailey Citigroup where he received rave reviews: “richly physical performance that drew the audience’s unfettered enthusiasm” - Philip Gordon. Cesar toured the world with Royal Caribbean cruise lines as a performer in the Broadway production of Saturday Night Fever as well as an aerialist. In the January 2018 issue of Dance Teacher Magazine, Cesar demonstrates the Giordano Technique alongside Nan Giordano in honor of the company’s 55th Anniversary Season. Cesar is a certified teacher in the Giordano Technique at the Basic, Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced, and Professional Levels of the Nan Giordano Certification Program® (NGCP®). Most recently Cesar returned to the stage at the Auditorium Theatre to perform Gus Giordano’s 1978 iconic solo Wings in honor of Nan Giordano’s 33 years at the helm and 25th Anniversary as Artistic Director for GDC. Lauren Warnecke of See Chicago Dance wrote, “...you could almost imagine Gus himself up there performing the piece he made 40 years ago.” He currently teaches master classes and workshops, as well as choreographs for universities and studios across the country.
