Undergraduate Program Auditions and Interviews

Auditions are required for the Dance BA/BFA, the Music Theatre BFA, and the Theatre BFA, Performance Concentration. A Portfolio Submission and Interview is required for the Theatre BFA, Design and Technology Concentration. Students unable to attend an audition or interview date please contact us

Undergraduate Program Auditions and Interviews Requirements and Registration

Applicants to the University at Buffalo interested in auditioning must:

  1. Submit Online Audition/Interview Registration Form 
  2. Return completed Departmental Major Interest Form 
  3. Apply to the University at Buffalo through the Office of Admissions 

Resumes, Career Statements, Headshots, and References should be brought with you the day of the audition. Audition fees should be paid in advance at time of registration. 

Dance BA/BFA Auditions

  • Class-style audition including ballet, modern, and jazz. Tap placement is determined by years of experience. No solo piece is required. 
  • Proper dance attire
    • Solid colored leotard and tights or black tights/jazz pants; ballet slippers; jazz shoe. Convertible tights suggested for easy transition from ballet to modern. 
  • Resume 
    • Name and Contact Information (Address, Email, Phone, High School/College)
    • Dance Training History (Where you studied and with whom, styles, performances, awards, etc. 
    • Two references (name and addresses)
  • Career Goal Statement 
    • One-page essay about why you want to major in dance, why you are considering UB, and your long term goals in the field of dance. 
  • Headshots
    • Headshot (3” x 5” or larger)
    • First Arabesque Photo (3” x 5” or larger)
    • Photos do not have to be professional portraits, but must be clear and of good quality. They will not be returned. 
  • Audition Fee: $30

Music Theatre BFA Auditions

  • Two contrasting songs from the standard Music Theatre Repertoire, not longer than 32 bars in length.  (No “American Idol” style pop, rock, etc.). 
    • Please bring sheet music for your songs, an accompanist will be provided. Music must be in the candidate’s key. 
  • Dance Class
    • Please come prepared with proper dance attire: solid colored tights and leotards, tight dance pants; no bare midriff or excessive layers. Ballet slippers and jazz shoes. 
  • Monologue
    • Age-appropriate serious or comedic monologue from a classic or contemporary play. 
    • No longer than one minute. 
  • Resume 
    • Production/Performance experience
    • Training History
    • Two reference letters that includes contact information
  • Career Goal Statement (one paragraph, 50 words)
  • Headshot: 3” x 5” or larger 
  • Audition Fee: $30

2020-2021 Music Theatre BFA Audition Dates

Theatre BFA, Performance Concentration Auditions

  • Video of two contrasting monologues
    • Age-appropriate contrasting monologues from contemporary plays. 
    • Not to exceed 2 minutes, each 
  • Digital Resume 
    • Production/Performance experience
    • Training History
    • Two reference letters including contact information 
  • Digital Career Goal Statement (one paragraph, 50 words)
  • Digital Headshot, 3"x5" or larger
  • Audition Fee: $30

2020-2021 Theatre BFA Performance Audition Dates

Online rolling admissions. We are currently accepting online audition submissions. Please submit your audition materials to request a personalized audition appointment, via email to both Professor Vincent O’Neill and Professor Maria S. Horne

Additionally, we will be holding group informational sessions online, for interested students who submit an audition application. Details and link will be sent to your e-mail address one week in advance of the scheduled meetings. RSVP is kindly requested.

Theatre BFA, Design and Technology Interviews

  • Resume
  • Letter of Intent outlining your interest in Theatrical Design and Production, as well as your specific interest to the University at Buffalo
  • Portfolio (Hard copy or digital) with samples of work that may include but are not limited to:
    • Production photos
    • Documentation of pieces designed or built for production
    • Designs from other disciplines (fashion, architecture, etc.)
    • Samples of drafting
    • Drawing/painting skills
    • Fine artwork 
    • Photography
    • Paperwork used to manage a project
    • Anything you feel is relevant to the study of theatre, design, technology, stage management, and collaborative work
  • On Campus Interview with Design and Technology faculty 
  • Interview Fee $30

Graduate Program Auditions

Graduate Programs Requirements and Registration

Auditions are required for admission to the MFA Dance Program, in addition to filling out the online application.

Applicants to the University at Buffalo interested in auditioning must:

  1. Submit Online MFA Dance Audition Registration Form 
  2. Apply to the University at Buffalo through online application  

MFA Dance 

  • Performance of the applicant’s original choreography (3 minutes) 
  • Technique class in Modern, Ballet, and Improvisation (expertise in all forms is not required)
  • In person writing sample
  • Faculty interview 

MFA Dance applicants interested in consideration for a Teaching Assistantship will have additional interview requirements. Please see our Funding page for more information.
