DIRECTOR’S NOTE

As Dolly Parton would say, “Well hey there y’all!” Welcome to the University at Buffalo Department of Theatre and Dance production of 9 to 5: The Musical. Many of us are familiar with the original source material, the 1980 film starring the incomparable Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, and of course, Dolly Parton. But I know many of us are not familiar with the stage version, bringing the iconic movie to life with all the songs written by Dolly Parton herself. For the die-hard fans, you will recognize a very close script akin to the film, and that’s because the original co-screenwriter, Patricia Resnick, also wrote the musical. I feel this helped genuinely capture the elements and humor of the film we all fell in love with, yet also maintain the essence of the story. The brilliant thing about both the film and the musical is the way the vital message of equality and women’s rights are cleverly wrapped in a hilarious and witty script, showcasing three strong and inspiring female characters.

I still remember being a young audience member watching the pre-Broadway tryout of this musical in Los Angeles, way back when I was in college! I remember how big, lush, exciting, hilarious, and epic the original musical was, and how much I fell in love with it. I am beyond grateful to have been asked to share my vision for this show all these years later, bringing my passion for musical theatre and this zany, feel-good musical to the stage here at UB. Collaborating with the wonderful cast, crew, instructors, and artistic team has been a true honor.

Sometimes we need a little levity to distract us from everyday life, and I hope the joy, humor, song, and dance you see today by these fantastic students leaves you tapping your toes and humming along to the infamous tune of “9 to 5.” Thank you for supporting live theatre and arts education! Enjoy the show!!
