DIRECTOR'S NOTE

The Pajama Game has several features that continue to give it mass appeal: a timeless, Romeo and Juliet love story between two people on opposite sides of a conflict, a score filled with top-10 hits, Bob Fosse’s show-stopping choreography, and laugh-out-loud funny characters. Jean-Luc Goddard called the film adaptation, “The first left-wing operetta,” praising it for its audacity and enthusiastic musical-comedy embrace of workers at height of the McCarthy era. It was not the first left-wing operetta, but if the hyperbole fits...

The Pajama Game also introduced Bob Fosse’s choreography to Broadway. “Steam Heat,” remains one of his most iconic pieces of choreography. I was fortunate to learn the number from one of Fosse’s last dance captains, and I’ve set his choreography here. The rest of the choreography is influenced by Fosse’s style, integrating character quirks with vernacular, vaudeville and nightclub dance, more than technical “dance class” steps. MFA Dance student Rebekah Bono has contributed to the choreography, handling the staging for “Hernando’s Hideaway.”

The most challenging part of directing this musical is, perhaps, that the scenes are so well-written, and the comedy so precise. There are many not-great musicals out there, with short, concise scenes written to launch the story into the next song as quickly as possible. Those shows are easy to digest (and sometimes boring to direct), because they avoid complex behavior and subtext in favor of a dynamic lift, spectacle and getting to the next number. The level of craft in this script requires we match it, and that takes time and attention to detail.

I want to thank the Department of Theatre and Dance, my faculty and student collaborators, Associate Director Mason Barber, and Assistant Director Sophia Vessecchia for their essential contributions and support on this project.

In Love, Labor & Loungewear,

James Beaudry
