DIRECTOR'S NOTE

Now, You’re On Your Own …

In 1987, James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim followed up their Pulitzer Prize winning musical, “Sunday in the Park With George,” with “Into The Woods,” a musical farce/melodrama incorporating folk characters recorded and made famous by the Grimm brothers in the midst of 19th century Romanticism. The woods became the unifying theatrical device as both a literal and metaphorical intersection where chance encounters among these characters create the action.

From these ideas grew a musical so complex and thematically rich, it has become a contemporary classic, rarely matched in dramaturgical or musical craft. Familiar characters lead us on journeys toward self-actualization through countless predicaments: good vs. bad, self vs. other, parent vs. child, lack vs. excess, safety vs. harm, revenge vs. forgiveness, loneliness vs. community.

Romanticism peaked two centuries ago, but our human desires to understand, escape, transcend and connect across this complex and changing world still compel us. Maybe all storytellers have the spark of a Romantic wanderer in them. A wise friend told me recently that Sondheim’s music and lyrics give her permission to feel lonely but inspire her to connect with something bigger, an encounter with ourselves and the whole world. In my experience, that’s what woods (and musicals) are for.

My work on “Into The Woods” is dedicated to my mother, Lauren Blackstock Beaudry (UB Class of 1970), who conquered her own giants and gave me roots and wings and Sondheim.
