AI Policy

AI Policy for all CHE and MCH Graduate Degrees

Students are required to include the following AI attestation in candidacy exam documents, proposal documents, and master’s and doctoral dissertations: “I attest that any use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools in the preparation of this document has been fully disclosed.” Students should include this in their acknowledgements section.

A brief description of how generative AI tools were used should precede the attestation. Some common acceptable examples include use of generative AI tools to suggest edits for grammar or clarity; assist with paraphrasing during revision; brainstorming; summarize literature for preliminary review; generate draft outlines, titles, or headings; process research data, figures, or analyses; or produce code or formatting that was subsequently reviewed and verified by the student.

Examples of uses that are to be avoided include having generative AI produce substantive intellectual content (e.g., generating or fabricating research data); substantive syntheses of ideas or literature presented as the student’s own work; or using AI tools to complete examination materials intended to evaluate the student’s independent scholarship and comprehension.

Example AI attestation statement: Generative AI tools were used in an editorial capacity during the preparation of this policy to suggest alternative wording, refine sentence structure, and generate example language for disclosure statements and illustrative examples. I attest that any use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools in the preparation of this document has been fully disclosed.
