UB Faculty Contribute to Journal Honoring 100 Years of “Ulysses”

Two UB scholars are featured in a special issue of "The Romanic Review" that celebrates the 100th anniversary of James Joyce’s "Ulysses."

"Romanic Review" book cover.

Titled "Joyce and the Romanic World," the issue was published by Duke University Press in May 2025 and explores Joyce’s ties to the cultures and languages of France, Italy and Spain.

Joseph Valente, UB Distinguished Professor Emeritus of English, edited the issue and wrote the open-access introduction "James Joyce’s Romanic Exile." His essay frames Joyce’s work through the lens of exile, language and cultural exchange.

Elizabeth Scarlett, professor in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures, contributed an article titled "Ulysses and the Spanish Novel: Religious Connections in Camilo José Cela’s 'San Camilo, 1936' and Juan Goytisolo’s 'Don Julián." Her piece explores how Joyce’s influence shaped 20th-century Spanish fiction, particularly during the anti-Franco literary movement.

This issue reflects UB’s ongoing investment in global literary scholarship and supports the university’s broader efforts tied to the development of the James Joyce Museum in Buffalo.
