Program structure

  • For BS Holders: Typically completed in four years.
  • For MS Holders: Typically completed in three years.
  • Other Science or Engineering Degrees: Applicants must have:
    • 12 credits in advanced geology.
    • Completion of a Geology Field Camp.
    • These prerequisites can be completed during the doctoral program with guidance from your advisor. Additional prerequisites may be recommended based on your research focus.

Degree requirements

Graduate coursework (72 Credit Hours)

  • Includes 24 formal course credits.
  • Courses are selected in consultation with your advisor to align with your research goals.

Qualifying exam

  • Prepare and defend two research proposals.
  • One proposal typically forms the foundation for your dissertation research.

Technical defense

  • Present detailed research results for in-depth evaluation by a faculty committee.

Dissertation

  • Conduct original, impactful research.
  • Complete and defend your dissertation in an oral presentation before faculty.
