Affiliated Faculty in the Department of Psychology hold an unpaid appointment within the department as a result of successful nomination by a current faculty member of the department and successful approval by vote of the full department. Affiliated faculty provide a skill or service that is important to the mission of the department (i.e., research, teaching, student mentoring).
An individual must be nominated and sponsored by a member of the department faculty. This department member will first approach their respective area (e.g., Social-Personality, Clinical, etc.) with the nomination for the area’s review and possible approval. Upon area approval, the nominator will provide a letter of support in favor of the affiliate candidate to the Chair of the department, along with the potential affiliate’s CV. The affiliate candidate should have a PhD in psychology or a related field and be a full-time faculty in a different UB department OR have other relevant professional expertise.
Affiliate faculty candidates will be nominated for the Fall semester and will be voted on by the full department faculty presented on one ballot. Each affiliate faculty will be approved separately by a majority vote. Appointments will be for a 3-year term with renewal approved at the end of each 3-year term with recommendation from the area/sponsor.
Duties. Duties will be specific to the area and individual but may include some of the following: Collaboration on research (i.e., papers, grants, etc.), clinical supervision, student mentorship (i.e., co-advising, sitting on PHD, MS, honors committees), and teaching/lecturing in special courses, providing guest lectures, or colloquia. Specific duties for individual affiliated faculty will be outlined in detail within the letter of nomination and reviewed at the time of term renewal.
Privileges. Affiliate faculty will be entitled to a UB ID, access to UB library facilities, and will be listed as Affiliate Faculty on the Psychology Department website. Affiliate status alone does not come with any financial or other compensation. Department affiliates may receive compensation for specific duties (e.g., adjunct teaching, clinical supervision, etc.). Affiliate faculty may not use their UB Department of Psychology affiliation to sanction or advertise their own practice or research activities unless the research has direct ties to UB (e.g., UB faculty collaborators).
Removal. All Affiliate Faculty members will be reviewed at the end of their term prior to renomination/new nomination to determine whether expectations (per their nomination letter) were met. Affiliations may be terminated if expectations are not met or if there is a lack of continued endorsement from the area. They can also be removed at will prior to their 3-year term. Removal prior to the 3-year term would be a Chair-level decision.
Affiliated faculty will be monitored by the Department Chair and Administrative Support Team, with reviews occurring each Spring/Summer. New Affiliate faculty can be nominated at any time during the calendar year.
