The Department of Psychology reflects a commitment to cutting-edge research and outstanding training of graduate students in psychological sciences. We offer a vibrant and collegial atmosphere in which to investigate questions about the mind and behavior.

Research Areas

Active engagement in psychological research is at the core of our degree programs. Our productive faculty supervise students in four primary areas of psychology:

Behavioral Neuroscience focuses on understanding the control of motivated behaviors and the neural systems that underlie learning.
Clinical Psychology focuses on the understanding, measurement and treatment of psychological distress and dysfunction.
Cognitive Psychology focuses on clarifying how minds work and changing the way people think about mental and behavioral processes.
Social-Personality Psychology focuses on understanding how individuals navigate their social world, and why they do it the way they do.
Our Impact

The department has established strong connections across the University and throughout the Buffalo community, including at the Research Institute on Addictions, Buffalo VA Medical Center, Buffalo General Hospital, Erie County Medical Center, Women and Children’s Hospital and Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Cancer, as well as in the UB Departments of Psychiatry, Pediatrics and School Psychology.
