Incoming freshman or undergraduate transfer applicants who are interested in pursuing study in romance languages must first apply and be accepted to the University at Buffalo.
When applying, you should indicate your intended major on the application form. All relevant information, including admissions criteria, the online application, dates and deadlines, and standardized test score requirements, can be found by visiting UB Undergraduate Admissions.
Submit the CAS Major/Minor Change Request form to request one of the following changes to your academic plan:
Please note that change requests are also possible during the semester of the last prerequisite, in which case the department office will hold all paperwork until final grades are posted for the semester.
Coursework for the major and/or minor in Italian, French and Spanish begins at the 200 level, which is advanced intermediate. This corresponds to the fifth semester of college study (directly after 152 in each language). An AP score of 4 or 5, four years of intensive language study in high school, and/or direct language experience from living abroad or being raised in a foreign-language-speaking family may also qualify a student to begin taking courses at this level.
The major and minor degree tracks build upon advanced intermediate skills on the 200 level, to continue onto the 300 and 400 levels, with advanced language courses and content-based courses that focus on literature, culture, linguistics and language for special purposes (such as business and medicine).
Before declaring a major or minor, please consult the language concentration of choice (French, Italian or Spanish) to ensure you have met all requirements. Students are also strongly encouraged to meet with an RLL advisor prior to submitting the declaration form.
With questions about the undergraduate application process, please contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
