UB Salamanca Study Abroad Program
Studying abroad is an integral and highly rewarding component of learning a language well, and RLL majors and minors are strongly encouraged to study abroad through an approved program.
Studying a language in the place where it is spoken can change how you learn. It gives you the chance to use what you know in real conversations, understand culture more deeply and return to campus with stronger skills and a wider view of the world.
Through study abroad, students can:
A study abroad experience can also help students and families see how language learning connects to real opportunities after college.
RLL students can explore programs in Europe and other locations through department partnerships, UB programs and SUNY options. Opportunities vary by language, academic level and time of year.
Graduate Teaching Assistants may have the opportunity to teach in Paris through an exchange program with Université Paris Cité. Students teach English language and conversation courses while gaining international teaching experience and strengthening their language skills.
The program can also support dissertation research, fieldwork and academic collaboration with scholars in France. Teaching assistants typically complete about 12 hours of classroom instruction per week, with compensation of approximately 17,835 € for the academic year. Housing and meals are the responsibility of the participant.
Italian majors and minors may also explore opportunities to live and work in Italy through service or teaching programs. These experiences help students practice Italian in everyday settings while building professional experience and intercultural confidence.
Students may participate during the summer before completing their studies. This short-term experience gives students the chance to live in Italy, work in a service-based setting and use Italian in daily life.
Students may apply during their final semester of undergraduate study for a semester-long or year-long placement. This option can be a strong fit for students who want to build professional experience abroad after graduation.
RLL offers opportunities for students to study in Spain, including the Salamanca summer program run in partnership with Buffalo State. Students in Salamanca take language and culture courses while experiencing life in one of Spain’s historic university cities.
