Experience language and culture where it lives

Studying abroad is an integral and highly rewarding component of learning a language well, and RLL majors and minors are strongly encouraged to study abroad through an approved program.

Why study abroad?

Studying a language in the place where it is spoken can change how you learn. It gives you the chance to use what you know in real conversations, understand culture more deeply and return to campus with stronger skills and a wider view of the world.

Through study abroad, students can:

  • practice language in daily life
  • experience literature, history and culture firsthand
  • earn academic credit toward a major or minor
  • build independence and global confidence
  • strengthen preparation for graduate school, teaching and international careers

A study abroad experience can also help students and families see how language learning connects to real opportunities after college.

Explore study abroad opportunities

RLL students can explore programs in Europe and other locations through department partnerships, UB programs and SUNY options. Opportunities vary by language, academic level and time of year.

Take the next step
