An accelerated path to your JD

This combined degree provides an accelerated pathway from undergraduate study to law school. You'll begin by exploring the historical, political, philosophical and social foundations of law through the Legal Studies BA before advancing to the Juris Doctor (JD), where you'll develop the legal knowledge and professional skills needed for the practice of law.

What you'll learn

Legal Studies

  • Explore the historical, political, philosophical and social foundations of American law and legal systems.
  • Examine constitutional law, civil liberties, criminal justice, human rights and the relationship between law and society.
  • Strengthen critical thinking, analytical reasoning and evidence-based research skills.
  • Understand how laws are created, interpreted and applied across government and society.

Juris Doctor

  • Develop advanced legal reasoning, research, writing and advocacy skills 
  • Study core areas of legal practice, legal procedure and professional responsibility
  • Learn to analyze complex legal problems, interpret statutes and case law, and construct persuasive legal arguments
  • Gain practical legal experience through experiential learning opportunities offered by the School of Law.

Application process

Students may apply directly to the 3+3 track during undergraduate admission or enter the program during their first or second year with advisor approval. Admission to the UB School of Law requires a separate application. After completing the first year of law school, those credits count toward completion of the bachelor's degree. 

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible, students must:

  • Be Legal Studies majors with junior standing
  • Have completed prerequisite courses U.S. History 1 or 2 and Intro to American Politics
  • Meet the minimum GPA and LSAT requirements (outlined by the law school)
  • Apply and be admitted to the UB School of Law

Note: Acceptance to the Legal Studies major does not guarantee admission to the 3+3 program. Admission is highly competitive.
