Founded in 1974, Zodiaque Dance Company (ZDC) has UB’s eminent pre-professional dance company for more than five decades of innovative, creative performances.

In keeping with ZDC’s mission, the fall program features a diverse array of dance styles, including modern, contemporary, jazz, tap, and hip hop. In keeping with ZDC’s mission, the fall program features a diverse array of dance styles, including modern, contemporary, jazz, tap, and hip hop. Works will be created by UB Dance faculty Kurt Adametz and Chanon Judson. Judson will restage excerpts from Urban Bush Women's "Haint Blu" along with Mame Diarra Spies. Also featured in the concert will be works by accomplished local choreographers Ariana Dixie and Rachael Leonard.

The program is punctuated by the contributions of former UB Dance faculty members Thomas Ralabate (Immediate Past Artistic Director of ZDC and Professor Emeritus) and 3rd year MFA candidate Rebekah Bono. The concert is under the co-direction of faculty members Kerry Ring and Michael Deeb Weaver, who will also set works. It showcases collaborations with our Theatre Design/Technology program.

Hilariously funny and touchingly honest, Urinetown provides a fresh perspective on one of America's greatest art forms.

In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity's most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides that he's had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom!

Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, “Urinetown” is an irreverently humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny. Praised for reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical could be, “Urinetown” catapults the "comedic romp" into the new millennium with its outrageous perspective, wickedly modern wit and sustained ability to produce gales of unbridled laughter.

Celebrating diversity in both genre and theme, Choreographers Showcase features new dance works created and performed by BA, BFA and MFA dance majors. Student choreographers receive close faculty mentorship and collaborate with student lighting designers, sound designers, costumers and technicians.

We are proud to present this year’s Choreographers Showcase, featuring original choreography and design by a talented group of emerging artists.

Undergraduate Choreographers: The following undergraduate students present original choreography, each offering a distinct voice and vision through movement: Nathan Eck, Lauren Guarna, Jenna Hartke, Kendra Jones, Ariana Parsons, Selena Pereyra, Grace Rezin & Audree Woods (collaborative work), and Jasmine White.

MFA Dance Cohort Choreographers: Members of the MFA Dance cohort share new works that reflect their advanced research and choreographic exploration: Rebekah Bono, Alyvia Christensen, Madeline Dembowski, and Charity John.

Lighting Designers from TH433: Original lighting designs for the showcase are created by undergraduate students enrolled in TH433. Their artistry brings each choreographic work to life through light and atmosphere: Liam Deyell, Sheila Fastoff, Lisa Gallagher, Tarrin Kuehner, Dylan McGannon, Faith Marsala, Maili Novak, Chris Ochman, Kay O’Sullivan, and Ashtyn Rozenberg.

In Beckett's critically acclaimed play “Krapp’s Last Tape,” an aging man, who lives a lonely and shabby existence in a darkened room, listens to a taped recording of himself as a young man.

The off-Broadway sensation, a tour-de-force for one actor, is the most affectionate portrait of a character that Beckett has ever done: an aging man who lives a lonely and shabby existence in a darkened room. At year's end, he takes out a bottle of wine, a banana and his tape recorder, and he listens as his own voice from the past recounts the glories and hopes of his youth.

“In The End of Times” by theatre student Alex Fawkes is a satirical play that explores the question of who “deserves to be saved” when the world is ending. In the spring of 2026, three college students in the United States are struggling. With mounting discourse and legislative action from politicians putting their identities, their communities, and their safety in jeopardy, they turn to a hobby to help themselves escape: “Dungeons & Dragons (D&D).” These three “witches” and their Dungeon Master (Hecate) use role-playing games as a way to process living in a world that is hostile to them, and to fantasize about what a better world might look like.

In UB’s production, Shakespeare’s parable about ambition and power is brought into direct conversation with contemporary politics and the ideological fight to belong faced by Americans whose identities remain marginalized. In Shakespeare’s play, Macbeth is driven mad by his lust for power and control, and mounting violence eventually leads Macbeth’s Scotland to a bloody civil war. Accordingly, “Macbeth” asks us to consider what qualities a good leader needs, how leaders can have healthy relationships to the power they wield, and the importance of protecting a nation from greed and corruption.

Now in its seventh season, ChoreoLab is a performance and choreographic research laboratory for faculty, graduate and undergraduate dance students and guest artists. The annual MFA Dance Thesis Concert will feature the premier of new works by MFA Dance candidates Rebekah Bono and Charity John. The production showcases the culmination of the creative research from their thesis projects, a requirement for the conferral of the degree Master of Fine Arts. The concert features collaborations with designers, technologists and the student performers.

The Master of Fine Arts in Dance is the equivalent of the PhD in a scholarly discipline and represents the synthesis of years of study and the honing of artistic sensibilities. Every journey begins with a wish. With “Into the Woods,” James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim have taken the fairytale characters of the Brothers Grimm and woven together their timeless stories into a musical masterpiece that has become a rare modern classic.

When a baker learns that he and his wife cannot have a child because of the sins of his father, the couple set off on a three-day journey to break the generational curse. Deep in the woods, where witches, ghosts and wolves appear, they encounter Cinderella running away from the ball, Little Red Riding Hood finding her way to her grandmother, Rapunzel escaping from her tower, and Jack, who has traded his cow for magic beans.

It’s a race against time for their wishes to come true, but wishes come with a price. When the consequences of their actions return to haunt them, each character is faced with a choice—join the group or go it alone.

One of Sondheim's most popular works, “Into the Woods” is a profound, darkly comic and musically sophisticated show about what it means to navigate this changing world together. The Tony Award-winning book and score are both whimsically enchanting and deeply affecting.

The College of Arts and Sciences Spotlight Symposia Series Each Spotlight symposium honors a particular faculty member by inviting distinguished speakers to our campus who share the honoree’s research field. The symposium places our honoree at the center of vital national and international conversations and serves as an important venue for building scholarly relationships critical to the university.

The Series includes an Honoree Talk with Diana Ana, PdD, who will discuss “Toward a Climate Haven,” a project blending sustainability science with performance art to address Western New York's role as a potential climate refuge amid its own climate uncertainties. This program is brought to you by the UB Department of Environment and Sustainability and the UB Department of Theatre and Dance. The research team includes: Tim Chevral, professor; Susan Clark, assistant professor and Kacey Stewart, postdoctoral associate from the Department of Environment and Sustainability and from the Department of Theatre and Dance: Lynne Koscielniak, professor and Eero Laine, associate professor.

Professor Aga is a recognized world leader in environmental analytical chemistry. She has developed innovative methods that identify “emerging contaminants” and analyze and predict their movements through the environment.

Her seminal contributions have dramatically improved our knowledge of the ecological and human impacts of emerging contaminants, such as antimicrobials and other pharmaceuticals, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, pesticides and PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals.”

A prolific scholar, Professor Aga has published over 200 peer-reviewed journal articles, nine book chapters and two edited books. Since joining UB, she has been awarded more than $20 million dollars in federal, state and industrial grants to support her research.

Professor Aga is the recipient of numerous local, national and international awards and honors. Among her many honors, she has received two Fulbright Fellowships; a National Science Foundation CAREER award; the Jacob F. Schoellkopf Medal of the Western New York American Chemical Society, an  American Chemical Society AGRO Fellow, and an Alexander von Humboldt Research fellowship. She is also an elected fellow of the American Chemical Society.

ABOUT ZODIAQUE DANCE COMPANY'S “DANCE LIVE" FOR SCHOOLS:

• Approximately 60 minute program with combination of dance and dialogue about the work
• Jazz, modern, and contemporary fusion styles presented
• Innovative designs on the UB Center for the Arts Drama Theatre stage

The art of dance uses movement to communicate meaning that defines the human experience. Dance reflects the values of a multicultural society, stimulates critical thinking and makes cognitive and artistic connections through the creative process. Zodiaque Dance Company (ZDC) has succeeded for over 47 years in proving that Dance is a relevant subject of inquiry, integration, and engagement. This spring, ZDC presents Dance Live, a dance experience that explores various styles of movement and asks the question “What is Dance?” Through accessible dances designed to entertain, excite, and integrate the arts through movement, students will make connections to international dance styles, popular American dance forms, and interpretive expressions of modern dance. ZDC is an innovative force, advancing inspired talents through stimulating collaborations and creative investigations which deepens audience understanding and appreciation for the arts.

Curriculum Connections: Language/Communication, Explores Diversity through Movement, Aesthetic Inquiry, Music, Athleticism, Making Observations and Connections, Asking Questions, and Sharing Findings with Others.

The UB Arts Collaboratory and the UB Department of Media Study are contributing sponsors towards Improved Journeys, a transdisciplinary faculty research project that includes the development of the danceSense performance.

• Approximately 2h30m (including 10m intermission) program with combination of dance and dialogue about the work
• Innovative set, costume and lighting designs on the UB Center for the Arts Drama Theatre stage

9 to 5 The Musical, with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and book by Patricia Resnick, is based on the hit movie. Set in the late 1970s, this hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is rated PG-13 by Music Theatre International. Audiences should be advised that, while this show works in the frame of camp, content includes sexual situations and references, violence (explicit and implied), gun violence, and light drug use. Please take care while viewing.
