We are proud to announce that THD’s Design and Technology program has been recognized by the University Resident Theatre Association (URTA) with an institutional award for excellence in undergraduate training. In addition, Timothy “TJ” Wildow, a current design tech student in the program under the leadership of Associate Professor Jonathan Shimon, has been chosen to receive URTA’s Candidate Award, which includes free registration to the upcoming conference.
“The design and technology area is very grateful to receive this award which reflects many years of work from countless people,” added Professor Shimon. “This recognition from URTA has been earned by faculty, staff, and alums. A student’s journey to URTA marks a beginning of the post-graduation transition from UB.
It signals a commitment to further education and specialization in theatre design, technology, or management. Through their portfolios, students represent themselves and the best work of UB Theatre and Dance. This award belongs to the entire department, congratulations!"

More than 1,200 candidates pursuing graduate theater training take part in URTA Auditions and Interviews each year. The event also includes classes, workshops, and panel discussions on theatre topics of interest to both candidates and recruiters. URTA was founded in 1969 to ensure the continued renewal of American theater by supporting excellence in the professional training of new artists. URTA develops programs and services that answer the needs of university theatres, training programs, and individual artists.
