The French Program at the University at Buffalo offers students the opportunity to master French, a major international language of the arts, commerce, diplomacy and science. Embark on a journey that enhances your academic, professional, and personal growth through the mastery of the French language and culture!
Spoken daily by 235 million people — not only in France, but also in other parts of Europe as well as Canada, the Caribbean, North and Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia — French is an official language of 29 countries. It is also a working language of many international institutions including the United Nations, the European Union, the World Health Organization and the World Trade Organization.
About 30% of English words come from French, and there are countless artistic, literary, and philosophical connections between France and English-speaking countries.
The French BA program provides training in both spoken and written French through interactive classes. Students will engage with texts, films and special events showcasing the diverse literatures and cultures of French-speaking regions. Studying abroad is strongly encouraged to enhance language skills and cultural understanding.
