Italian is spoken by more than 60 million people, primarily in Italy but also in Switzerland and significant communities in the United States, Canada, Germany, Australia and South America. Studying Italian not only opens doors to a beautiful language, but also to a rich cultural heritage.
The Italian Program at the University at Buffalo develops an appreciation of Italian world cultures through an engaged study of language, literature and film. It provides various ways for students to acquire or improve language proficiency, explore Italian cultural aspects and gain a strong foundation in Italian literature and film. Students are encouraged to study abroad to fully immerse themselves in Italian culture.
