Force Registration

Sometimes, you may need special permission to register for a course. That’s where force registration comes in. Below are the key things you need to know.

When and how to access the Force Registration dashboard

Before you submit a request

Check these things first:

  • Waitlist: If the class has a waitlist, you must join that instead of requesting force registration.
  • Restrictions: If a course is open but restricted (like needing a prerequisite or permission), you can submit a request.
  • Open courses only: Force registration only applies to open classes, not full ones.

What’s a free elective?

If a class is full or doesn’t work out, consider registering for a Free Elective, a course that isn’t part of your major requirements but still helps you graduate. These can even count toward your UB Curriculum. Ask your academic advisor for help picking one.

Reasons you can submit a force registration request

Missing a Prerequisite or Corequisite

  • You’re waiting for transfer credits to be processed.
  • You’ve been approved to use a different course instead (Attach proof like a transcript or advisor’s email).

Repeating a Course

You’ve already taken the course twice and need department approval to try again. Some courses (like foreign languages or high-demand classes) have different rules, so check the UB Repeat Policy and see which courses are controlled.

Permission Required

Some classes (internships, research, language courses) need department approval. Contact the department first, then submit your request with the required documents.

Processing and timelines

  • Requests are reviewed first-come, first-served.
  • It might take longer to hear back during busy times, like right after registration opens or during add/drop.
💡 Pro tip:

Want to avoid delays? Double-check your course info in HUB, follow the steps above and have your supporting documents ready.
