You do not have to major in linguistics or a language to make it part of your education. UB’s linguistics minors let you build language proficiency, explore how language works or deepen your understanding of the cultures and communities connected to the languages you study.

Minor Programs

  • Minor in American Sign Language

    Build proficiency in American Sign Language while learning about the language and the communities that use it. This minor is a strong complement for students interested in communication, education, health-related fields, social services or other careers where connecting with people matters.
  • Minor in Chinese

    Develop your Chinese language skills while expanding your understanding of Chinese culture. This minor can complement studies in fields such as international business, communication, history, political science or other areas with a global focus.
  • Minor in German

    Build German language proficiency while exploring the cultures and contexts in which the language is used. The minor is a flexible way to continue studying German while pursuing a major in another field.
  • Minor in Japanese

    Strengthen your Japanese language skills and deepen your understanding of Japanese culture. Pair the minor with another major to add language proficiency and cross-cultural communication skills to your academic experience.
  • Minor in Korean

    Develop your ability to communicate in Korean while gaining a deeper understanding of Korean culture. This minor gives students from across UB a structured way to continue their language study alongside another major.
  • Minor in Linguistics

    Interested in language itself? The Linguistics Minor introduces you to the scientific study of language and the patterns behind how people communicate. Explore areas such as sounds, grammar and meaning while developing analytical and problem-solving skills that can complement fields from psychology and anthropology to education and computer science.

    Explore Polish language and culture through an interdisciplinary program that can complement studies in the humanities, social sciences and other fields. The minor gives you an opportunity to develop language skills while gaining a broader understanding of Poland and its cultural traditions.
