BUFFALO, N.Y. - "Chinese Maximalism," the groundbreaking exhibition organized by UB Art Galleries and the Millennium Art Museum in Beijing, China, has opened in New York City -- at Ethan Cohen Fine Arts -- in conjunction with Asia Week 2004.

The exhibit opened on March 24 with a reception and lecture by Curator Gao Minglu, a leading authority on Chinese art in the 20th and 21st- centuries and assistant professor at the Department of Art History in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Buffalo.

It will be on view through May 22, 2004.

Chinese Maximalism is the first exhibition of its kind organized to address the concept of "Maximalism", a term recently coined by Gao to distinguish this particular body of Chinese contemporary art. The exhibition presents a range of work by Chinese artists including Qiu Zhijie, Ding Yi, Gu Dexin, Hong Hao, Yang Zhenzhong, Cao Kai, Shen Fan, Song Tao, Li Huasheng, Xu Hongmin, and Lei Hong, among others.

Gao is organizing "The Wall: Reshaping Contemporary Chinese Art," the largest exhibition of contemporary Chinese art to travel beyond China, which will be on display in the UB Art Galleries and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo from Oct. 1, 2005 through Jan. 8, 2006.

Ethan Cohen Fine Arts, located at 37 Walker Street in Manhattan, is the third and final stop for this exhibition, which premiered in Beijing a year ago, before traveling to UB Art Galleries last fall.
