Media Advisory: Nursing expert on global health to present the 2014 Bullough Lecture

Marla Salmon, ScD, RN, FAAN

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Marla Salmon, ScD, RN, FAAN, known internationally for her nursing scholarship on global and domestic health policy, global health workforce development and strengthening of health systems, will present the 18th Annual Bonnie Bullough Lecture at 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 19 in 105 Harriman Hall on UB’s South Campus.

The lecture, titled “Global Health and Nursing: YIMBY (Yes in my backyard!),” is free and open to the public.

Salmon's most recent work focuses on innovative investment/impact investment in nursing and midwifery enterprise and training as a means of empowering women and strengthening health systems.

Salmon is on the faculty of the University of Washington, serving as senior visiting fellow, Daniel J. Evans School of Public Affairs; professor, Department of Psychosocial and Community Health, School of Nursing; and professor Department of Global Health, School of Public Health.

In addition, Salmon is a member of the Commission to Build a Healthier America and a member of the Department of Veterans Affairs Special Medical Advisory Group. She is trustee emeritus for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, an Institute of Medicine (IOM) Distinguished Nurse Scholar-in-Residence Emeritus and a member of the IOM and a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.

She has held leadership roles in government, nongovernmental organizations and higher education.

Salmon has served as director of the Division of Nursing, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS); chair of the National Advisory Committee for Nursing Education and Practice; chair of the Global Advisory Group for Nursing and Midwifery and a member of the U.S. delegation of the World Health Organization; and a member of the Clinton administration’s Task Force on National Health Care Reform.

The Annual Bonnie Bullough Endowed Lecture series was created and funded by Vern L. Bullough to honor the memory of his wife and colleague, Bonnie, a former dean of the UB School of Nursing. The lecture series annually sponsors a nationally prominent leader to address topics relevant to the profession of nursing.
