As a Psychology major at UB, I was on the executive board for Psi Chi – the International Honor Society in Psychology, a member of the Undergraduate Psychology Association, a teaching assistant, and a student in the Psychology Honors Program, where I worked in a behavioral neuroscience lab on an independent research thesis. When I started exploring psychology, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do within the field, but the diversity of the courses and experiences in the department allowed me to explore different disciplines including law, clinical psychology, research, and medicine, and discover my interests. My experiences, particularly the mentorship I received through my research and the Psychology Honors Program, prepared me for working as a research fellow at the National Institutes of Health and for the rigor of medical school. My advice is to explore all that the psychology major has to offer, get to know professors and other mentors, be open to the variety of paths you can take after graduation, and have fun!
