Beyond the Classroom

Today's students recognize the value and benefits of meaningful international experience. Study sociology in London or Singapore with faculty from the Department of Sociology and Criminology, or check out the world of opportunities (literally!) for learning and personal development offered by Study Abroad at UB.

Internships are one of the most direct ways for students to explore future employment opportunities. Get resume experience while making connections and discovering a career that you love. Junior and senior Sociology or Criminology majors or Social Justice minors with at least a 2.0 GPA are eligible. We have established relationships with several local organizations with a social justice mission that are accepting applications for internships including the International Institute, Journey’s End, Open Buffalo, and Peace of the City to name a few. Some of our most recent internship placements have been with the Tonawanda Police Department, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Kids Escaping Drugs.

The Experiential Learning Network (ELN) gives undergraduate students the opportunity to dive deep into a subject of interest with distinguished faculty guiding their way. 

Driven by a shared passion for social change, a group of sociology students founded the Buffalo Community Lab (Buff Comm-Lab), a university-recognized organization dedicated to bridging the gap between UB and underserved Buffalo communities.

While other students might also choose to create their own avenues for change, Buff Comm-Lab has already made a significant impact. Through bi-weekly meetings, volunteer opportunities, and collaborative projects, they're not only fostering critical discussions on social issues but also actively implementing solutions. From volunteering in local schools to organizing essential drives and advocating for increased community engagement infrastructure, Buff Comm-Lab students are translating classroom knowledge into tangible action, proving that student-led initiatives can be powerful catalysts for positive change within the community.

UB promotes many forms of service-learning. From alternative break sessions to teaching in the Buffalo Public Schools to "Saturdays of Service," these unique community-oriented activities help others while building essential communication and leadership skills.
