Congratulations to Associate Professor Ariel Nereson, PhD, on being named co-editor of Theatre Journal along with Laura Edmonson, professor of theatre at Dartmouth University. Published by Johns Hopkins University Press, the Journal celebrates its 75th anniversary this year, with seventy-five volumes and a total of 298 issues to date.
Founder Barnard Hewitt expressed the hope in the 1949 inaugural issue, then called Educational Theatre Journal, that it would be “of the greatest possible use to students, workers, and the teachers of educational theatre and drama in all aspects and at all levels.” The journal is renowned for its ability to shape and reflect its many publics.
Virginia Scott became the journal’s first co-editor and the first female editor in 1973. In 1979 the journal changed its name to Theatre Journal to mark its new identity. As described by Nereson and Alison Bory, associate professor of dance at Davidson College, in their contribution to the latest issue, David Román’s 2003 special issue on dance paved the way for a steady stream of articles in dance studies, several of which would go on to win some of the most coveted prizes in theatre studies.
Nereson has also issued a call for papers for her first special issue of the Journal, “Abolition and Performance,” which will release next month.
Ariel Nereson, PhD, is Director of Graduate Studies and Associate Professor, Department of Theatre & Dance, University at Buffalo – SUNY.
