Chanon Judson Choreographs "The Hang" at HERE Arts Center in Manhattan

Congratulations to Chanon Judson, Visiting Associate Professor, and Artistic Director of Urban Bush Women professional dance company, on her choreography for Taylor Mac's new theatrical opera production at the HERE Arts Center in downtown Manhattan. The production runs from January 20 - February 20, 2022.

The Hang is a ritual celebration of queerness, questions, and the eternity of a moment. Rooted in the jazz tradition and operatic form, it imagines the final hours of the life of Socrates, as he asks his friends to use every moment left to think on virtue. What transpires is a centuries-long communal consideration, full of jazz, dance, debates, and queer romps.

The Hang was featured in last week’s NY Times: "What kind of a party do you throw when you’re about to die? It’s an especially morbid question these days. But in The Hang, a new opera from the performer Taylor Mac, the answer involves equal parts philosophy and décor.

The show, written with the composer Matt Ray, is about the death of Socrates, who after being convicted of corrupting the youth of Athens and sentenced to death by hemlock, spent his final hours talking about virtue with his friends."
