Meet the Department of Environment and Sustainability

students studying plants in field.

The Department of Environment and Sustainability works to help solve the most complex socioecological problems that face humankind today. From global climate change and biodiversity loss to population and consumption growth, we discuss and reach decisions regarding the human-natural systems that control the Earth’s future.

Experiential Learning

Our department’s experiential learning opportunities provide students with the chance to deepen their understanding of the world beyond the classroom.

  • Model the movement of pollutants in Western New York or examine how reef corals respond to global climate change by participating in faculty research
  • Gain real-world problem-solving skills and hands-on experience through an environmental internship in areas that range from policy to resources to education
  • Add international experience to your resume by studying abroad

Career-Focused

There is an ever-increasing demand for scientists with quantitative, interdisciplinary training in environmental sciences who can address, mitigate and manage the many environmental issues facing society. Our curriculum prepares students by integrating physical, chemical and biological aspects of these systems, along with the social facets of economics, arts, literature and justice.
