In preparation for Gabrielle Civil’s artist talk on Friday, January 15th @ 7pm EST, Civil’s 2014 performance Fugue (Da Montréal) (13:13) will be screened via Zoom and followed by a virtual discussion moderated by the exhibition’s curator. Performed at the Hemispheric Institute, Fugue offers a ritual meditation on emigration, cultural displacement, and ancestral re/covering. Using dirt, video loops, pockets of coffee, and “cut ups” from Dany Laferrière, Civil’s performance both confronts and transforms clichés of familial loss, impossible memory, and guilt.
