Graphic Design/Art & Technology Lab Usage Guidelines

All GD/AT Lab users are responsible for reading and following these guidelines. They have been established to promote equitable and enjoyable computer access for all Art
 students.

1. Work Environment In consideration of a cooperative and productive working environment:

  • Headphones are required for any extended audio output.
  • Cell phone ringers should be kept on “vibrate” or “off”.
  • All conversations (phone and person-to-person) should be kept in a low voice and to a minimum.

2. Authorized Users Labs are available to students currently enrolled in Graphic Design, Art & Technology, and Time-Based Strategies. Other Department of Art students may use the labs as guests.

3. Classwork Only The Computer Labs are furnished with state-of-the-art, high powered workstations, software and output/fabrication devices intended for the making of art and design. For non-GD/AT
class related activities and printing, other public sites on campus are available.

4. Log-in/out. Use your UB Credentials (UB IT name and password) to login. To minimize login time, use the same computers on a regular basis.

Students enrolled in GD/AT classes also have an account on the ubART-Xerox-7835 printer. Person numbers are used for printer accounting (see below.)

You must log-out at the end of your work session to secure any documents left on the desktop and to protect your print quota. Since log-ins on lab machines are logged, you may be held responsible for actions performed by others using your account.

5. Data Storage & Backup. Students are strongly encouraged to carry external drives to class on a regular basis, and to backup work after every session. You are responsible for keeping backup copies of your files. Lab computers are not backed up, and in an event such as necessary maintenance, work left on a computer may be deleted without notice! You must ensure that your work is backed up onto a removable drive, or at minimum, to a cloud-based server such as UBbox. Lost data is never an excuse for not meeting a deadline.

UBbox. Members of the UB Community are given free accounts at buffalo.box.com. You are encouraged to use Box to backup your data and for access across multiple computers and mobile devices. Box Drive is insulated on the lab computers. iOS and Android apps are available for free.

6. The Xerox 7835 Printer is a high-end graphics printer for ART course related artwork only — other course materials must be printed in the public labs through UB Print Anywhere. (There is a Wepa Kiosk in the basement of the CFA near the tunnel to Alumni Arena.) Each GD/AT lab fee entitles the student to make 100 black & white and 100 color impressions per semester, either 8.5×11 or 11×17 (counts as two impressions) single- or double-sided. (Unused prints may not be transferred and lab fees cannot be refunded.)

7. Lab Schedules, Availability & Time Limit Lab access is available on a 1st-come 1st-served basis during posted Open Lab times (the schedule is posted online and outside the lab doors). If users are waiting to use a computer, please limit your time and offer your seat to the next person waiting. If you leave your machine unattended for more than 15 minutes you may be logged-out.

Do not tie up lab machines with lengthy 3D or movie rendering. Rendering that will take more than 30 minutes should be done overnight in lab 142. Place a sign on the computer and be in when the lab reopens to save your work, or you might be logged out. Note that Adobe apps may require reactivation every 90 minutes — more details will be provided.)

8. Special Use Workstations The scanner and fabrication device workstations are prioritized for students needing to use them for those purposes. If that’s not you, please give your spot to someone who needs it for that special use.

Special equipment such as scanners, 3D printers and audio/video gear require special care. Do not operate equipment that you are not familiar with. Please ask you instructors for help.

9. Privacy and Acceptable Use Policy Logging in to the GD/AT Lab Computers requires agreement with UB's Acceptable Use Policy. Please read the banner message on the login screens.

Passwords and printer quotas must not be shared with others.
