Graphic Design/Art & Technology Lab Usage Guidelines

All GD/AT Lab users are responsible for reading and following these guidelines. They have been established to promote equitable and enjoyable computer access for all Art
 students.

1. Work Environment In consideration of a cooperative and productive working environment:

  • Headphones are required for any extended audio output.
  • Cell phone ringers should be kept on “vibrate” or “off”.
  • All conversations (phone and person-to-person) should be kept in a low voice and to a minimum.

2. Authorized Users Labs are available to students currently enrolled in Graphic Design, Art & Technology, Time-Based Strategies, and Senior Thesis. Other Department of Art students may use the labs as guests.

3. Classwork Only The Computer Labs are furnished with state-of-the-art, high powered workstations, software and output/fabrication devices intended for the making of art and design. For non-GD/AT class related activities and printing, other public sites on campus are available.

4. Log-in/out. Use your UB Credentials (UB IT name and password) to login. To minimize login time, use the same computers on a regular basis.

Students enrolled in GD/AT classes also have an account on the ART-Xerox printer. Person numbers are used for printer accounting (see below.)

You must log-out at the end of your work session to secure any documents left on the desktop and to protect your print quota.

5. Data Storage & Backup. Students are strongly encouraged to carry external drives to class on a regular basis, and to backup work after every session. You are responsible for keeping backup copies of your files. Lab computers are not backed up, and in an event such as necessary maintenance, work left on a computer may be deleted without notice! You must ensure that your work is backed up onto a removable drive, or at minimum, to a cloud-based server such as UBbox. Lost data is never an excuse for not meeting a deadline.

6. The Art-Xerox Printer is a high-end graphics printer for ART course related artwork only — other course materials must be printed in the public labs through UB Print Anywhere. (There is a Wepa Kiosk in the basement of the CFA near the tunnel to Alumni Arena.) Each GD/AT lab fee entitles the student to make 100 black & white and 100 color impressions per semester, either 8.5×11 or 11×17 (counts as two impressions) single- or double-sided. (Unused prints may not be transferred and lab fees cannot be refunded.)

7. Lab Schedules, Availability & Time Limit Lab access is available on a 1st-come 1st-served basis during posted Open Lab times (the schedule is posted online and outside the lab doors). If users are waiting to use a computer, please limit your time and offer your seat to the next person waiting. If you leave your machine unattended for more than 15 minutes you may be logged-out.

8. Special Use Workstations The scanner and fabrication workstations are prioritized for students needing to use them for those purposes. If that’s not you, please give your spot to someone who needs it for that special use.

Special equipment such as scanners, 3D printers and audio/video gear require special care. Do not operate equipment that you are not familiar with. Please ask you instructors for help.

9. Privacy and Acceptable Use Policy Logging in to the GD/AT Lab Computers requires agreement with UB's Acceptable Use Policy. Please read the banner message on the login screens.

Passwords and printer quotas must not be shared with others.
