Get paid support for a biology internship

The Biological Sciences Experiential Learning Fellowship helps you take on an internship without worrying as much about finances. Selected students receive funding, complete a semester-long internship in Western New York and earn academic credit through the Biological Sciences Internship course.

This fellowship supports undergraduate Biological Sciences majors who want hands-on experience connected to their academic and career goals.

Program details

  • Support amount: $3,375
  • Time commitment: 15 hours per week for 15 weeks
  • Semester options: Fall or spring
  • Course requirement: Enroll in “Biological Sciences Internship” (BIO 496) while completing the internship

Who is eligible

To apply, you must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Declared Biological Sciences major
  • Matriculated and completed at least 30 credits
  • Completed Evolutionary Biology (BIO 200) and Cell Biology (BIO 201) with a minimum grade of B
  • Minimum institutional GPA of 3.0

Some internships may have additional criteria. These will be clearly listed in each posting.

How the fellowship process works

  1. Organizations apply to host interns
    Local organizations submit a short description of the internship role and how it supports BIO 496 learning goals.
  2. The department reviews internship sites
    Internships are selected based on clear duties, strong supervision and alignment with academic outcomes.
  3. Internships are posted for students
    Approved positions are shared in Bullseye powered by Handshake and sent to declared Biological Sciences majors.
  4. Students apply and interview
    Eligible students apply directly through Bullseye. Organizations interview candidates and select their intern.
  5. Internship begins
    Selected students complete their internship while enrolled in BIO 496.

During the internship

Students work 15 hours per week at their internship site for the full semester while completing BIO 496 coursework.

What the internship site provides

Each site assigns a supervisor who will:

  • Provide orientation and clear expectations
  • Define goals and responsibilities
  • Offer regular feedback
  • Complete midterm and final evaluations
  • Confirm hours worked

What the student is responsible for

As a student intern, you will:

  • Complete assigned duties connected to BIO 496 learning goals
  • Follow UB policies and site guidelines
  • Complete course assignments and reflections
  • Communicate with your supervisor and the internship coordinator
