Minor in Biological Sciences

To qualify for the Minor in Biological Sciences, students complete a short list of required and elective courses within the department. There is also a special Biotechnology Minor available for chemical engineering students.

Minor Degree Program Summary

Required credit hours in Biological Sciences: 22

Required courses in Biological Sciences:

  • BIO 200 Evolutionary Biology
  • BIO 201 Cell Biology
  • BIO 211 Cell Biology Lab
  • BIO 303 General Physiology
  • BIO 305 Fundamentals of Biological Chemistry
  • One BIO lab course
  • 5 additional elective credits at the 300-400 level to reach 22 credit hours. Selection of electives should be made in consultation with the Departmental Advisor or one’s faculty advisor. May use BIO 498 (Undergrad Research) for 3 credits. May use BIO or cognate elective courses given in the BA menu list.

Required courses in Chemistry:

  • CHE 101/CHE 113 (CHE 101 prior to Fall 2019) or CHE 105 or CHE 107/CHE 127 General Chemistry
  • CHE 102 /CHE 114 (CHE 102 prior to Fall 2019)  or CHE 106 or CHE 108/CHE 128 General Chemistry
  • CHE 201 Organic Chemistry I or CHE 203/205

Biotechnology Degree Minor for students majoring in UB Chemical Engineering

  • BIO 201 Cell Biology
  • BIO 305 Fundamentals of Biological Chemistry
  • BIO 315 Fundamentals of Biological Chemistry Lab

  • BIO 332 Advanced Molecular Biology Lab
  • BIO elective credits (BIO 300/400-level courses) to bring total to 22 credits hours
