Dear Members of the UB Community,

As a result of the escalating civil unrest and street violence in various parts of Thailand, and particularly Bangkok, in recent weeks, the U.S. Department of State has issued a Travel Warning for U.S. citizens considering travel to Thailand: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_4888.html.

According to this Travel Warning dated May 15, 2010, "The Department of State recommends against travel to Bangkok and non-essential travel to Thailand at this time."

In accordance with SUNY and UB policies, faculty, staff and students are duly advised to avoid unnecessary travel to Thailand until further notice.

Members of the UB community who undertake travel to Thailand despite the travel warning do so at their own risk and without university sanction.

Please be advised that Research Foundation (RF) policy prohibits reimbursement of expenses for travel on RF-funded projects to countries currently subject to Department of State travel warnings.

In addition, international insurance policies for emergency evacuation and repatriation such as Medex and SOS include restrictions on coverage for insured persons traveling to countries subject to State Department travel warnings.

Members of the UB community considering travel to Thailand in the near future should contact the Office of International Education at 645-2368 for further guidance.

Sincerely,

Stephen C. Dunnett, Professor and

Vice Provost for International Education
