The University at Buffalo is in close contact with the Erie County Department of Health regarding probable and suspected cases of mumps among a small number of students living off-campus.

Working with UB’s office of Student Health Services, the Department of Health has taken the lead on this matter and is speaking with the students’ close personal contacts and with non-UB students who may have been in close contact with the students.

As a precautionary measure, UB has issued a notification to all students, faculty and staff informing them of the situation and asking them to monitor their own health.

Updates will be provided as needed to the UB community and helpful information has been posted to the Student Health Services website.  Anyone showing symptoms is encouraged to contact Student Health Services or their own health care provider.

The university is currently reviewing immunization records to identify students who are not immune to mumps who may need to either be vaccinated or excluded from classes and activities when the semester resumes next week after spring break. While the mumps vaccine is not 100 percent effective, two doses of mumps containing vaccine provide the best protection against mumps.

Additional information for the UB community is available at http://www.student-affairs.buffalo.edu/shs/student-health/nysdhmumpsp.pdf.
