Buffalo, N.Y. -- The UB Center for the Arts will present Randy Travis at 8 p.m. on Nov. 8 in the Mainstage Theatre in the Center for the Arts on the UB North (Amherst) Campus. The concert is sponsored by WYRK-FM.
Randy Travis is one of the most popular artists in the history of country music. He has sold more than 20 million albums since bringing back a classic sound to country music with his quadruple-platinum 1986 debut, "Storms of Life." During his career he has garnered three Grammy Awards, five Country Music Awards, eight Academy of Country Music Awards, 10 American Music Awards and two Dove Awards.
Turned down by nearly every record label in Nashville, Travis was signed to Warner Brothers Records in 1985. In 1986, Warner Brothers released his first album "Storms of Life." In September 1997, after 12 albums with Warner Brothers, Travis was the first artist to sign with the newly formed DreamWorks Records label in Nashville. When "Out of My Bones," the first single from the new label's debut album, "You and You Alone," was released in 1998, he delivered the label its first No. 1 country hit. "A Man Ain't Made of Stone," Randy's second album for DreamWorks, was released in 1999 and continued his journey as one of the biggest selling, and most distinctive, artists in country music.
The year 2000 brought the release of the highly anticipated live concert recording "Randy Travis Live: It Was Just A Matter of Time," which was released as both an audio CD and DVD. The recording featured 25 songs, including such Randy Travis favorites as "Forever and Ever Amen," "Better Class of Losers," "On the Other Hand" and "Matter of Time." It is the first live concert on video or audio that Travis has released in his career.
Also in 2000, Travis released a religious-themed album, "Inspirational Journey," to great acclaim. The unconventional gospel/country album retained a strong presence on the charts, remaining on the Billboard Top Country Album chart for more than 52 consecutive weeks.
Travis balances a full-time music career with a full-time acting career. In addition to guest appearances on TV's "Matlock," "Touched By An Angel" and "Texas," his film credits include "The Rainmaker," "Frank and Jessie," "Black Dog," "Fire Down Below" and "White River Kid." Travis most recently appeared in the Miramax/Dimension film, "Texas Rangers."
