“Above all, learning to think critically about psychological phenomena in a scientific way by being exposed to the full research cycle was a major highlight during my time as a UB Psychology major. Being a member of a laboratory was an invaluable opportunity. Witnessing the burgeoning of ideas among graduate students at the time was a palpable form of inspiration—it solidified within me that I could be a scholarly researcher, too. 

Along with enthralling coursework, conversations with faculty mentors, and working collaboratively with fellow scholars, being an RA and lab supervisor prepared me very well for my academic future. I am a current MA student in a general psychology program, and I will soon be attending a Social Psychology PhD program. Having an extensive research background in UB’s Psychology program aided tremendously with the realization of these opportunities.

As a word of advice to future UB Psychology students: Plan ahead, ask critical questions, and embrace the inevitable mistakes. If you are serious about a future in the field of Psychology, inquire about opportunities and job prospects relevant to your subfield of interest. Get early, hands-on experience in lab/applied settings, sharpen your quantitative skills wherever pertinent (e.g., statistics courses), and think deeply about what you want to do beyond a just bachelor’s degree.”
