Helping communities through family support

The Child and Family Studies concentration within the Health and Human Services BA focuses on child development, family systems and the institutions that shape childhood experiences. Through interdisciplinary coursework and applied learning, students examine the social, educational and health-related factors that influence children and families.

What you’ll learn

By completing the Child and Family Studies concentration, you will:

  • Understand child and adolescent development across social, educational and family contexts
  • Analyze the role of institutions and services that support children and families
  • Evaluate social science research and apply statistical and research methods to human services questions
  • Recognize the importance of cultural diversity and human values in health and human services
  • Develop professional skills in communication, interviewing, presentation and client-centered support

Add a minor

Students may benefit from adding the Nonprofit Leadership minor to expand their understanding of how community organizations support children and families and provide valuable leadership and administrative experience.

The Nonprofit Leadership minor is especially useful for students interested in:

  • Understanding how nonprofit organizations operate and create community impact
  • Building skills in leadership, fundraising, advocacy and program evaluation
  • Learning how social policy and nonprofit work intersect with child and family services
  • Developing experience working with diverse populations and community organizations
