Supporting mental health and well-being

The Community Mental Health concentration within the Health and Human Services BA examines the personal, social and systemic factors that influence mental health and well-being. Students explore topics such as addiction, counseling, family dynamics and access to care while developing an understanding of how communities can support individuals.

What you'll learn

By completing the Community Mental Health concentration, you will:

  • Understand how social, cultural and environmental factors influence mental health and wellness
  • Evaluate social science research and apply research methods to human services questions
  • Recognize the impact of diversity, ethics and client autonomy in health and human services settings
  • Develop professional skills in writing, interviewing, communication and client support
  • Analyze evidence-based approaches to prevention, intervention and community mental health services

Students in the Community Mental Health concentration may benefit from adding the Nonprofit Leadership minor to gain a deeper understanding of the organizations that provide many mental health and human services programs. 

The Nonprofit Leadership minor is especially valuable for students interested in:

  • Understanding how nonprofit organizations support mental health and community well-being
  • Building leadership skills in advocacy, program management and community engagement
  • Learning how funding, fundraising and grant writing support mental health initiatives
  • Developing expertise in working with diverse populations and addressing social inequities
