2019 Undergraduate Degree Program Update

On behalf of Dr. Peter Morgan, Director of Undergraduate Studies in Economics, we want to make sure you are aware that our Undergraduate Economics BA degree program will have some notable updates beginning this fall 2019 semester. If you are interested in becoming an Economics major at some point, please make note of the following changes.

Up until close of business August 16th, 2019, you may apply* to the Economics major and designate between being coded in HUB under the OLD major (prerequisites = Calc I & II and ≥ 2.0 ECO GPA) or the NEW major (prerequisites = Calc I and ≥ 2.5 ECO GPA).

*Currently-approved or Intended ECO majors, this does not apply to you!

Here is an outline of our new Economics BA program, with differences from the old major in bold:

Prerequisites:

30 credits completed

≥ 2.0 overall UB GPA

2 Economics courses taken with ≥ 2.5 ECO GPA

Calculus I is the only required math course.

Core Courses (12 cr):

ECO 405 (3cr)

ECO 407 (3cr)

ECO 380 (3cr)

ECO 480* (3cr)

*Note that ECO 480 starting in Fall 2019 is not the same course content as had been taught in ECO 480 prior to Fall 2019. This new course is a true econometrics course, introducing linear regression methods and their many uses in applied economics. ECO 380 is the pre-requisite for this course.

8 any-level elective ECO credits (ECO 181, Intro to Macroeconomics, & ECO 182, Intro to Microeconomics, are the recommended courses as they are 4cr each.)

15 upper-level elective ECO credits (total of 5 courses)

If you are currently looking to change your major to ECO or add it as a second major and you believe it would be beneficial for you to be coded under the OLD requirements, please email Christine Dipiano.

If you have any questions regarding this announcement, please email them to us and we will do our best to answer them in a timely manner.

p.s.: Please download the major/minor application form. Be sure to designate which (Old or New) major requirements under which you would prefer to be accepted.
