Economics of education, Development economics, Labor economics
My research focuses on understanding and improving disparate outcomes in education. I use economic theory, randomized experiments, and quasi-experimental analysis to quantify how decisions and policies affect educational outcomes. I have conducted experimental and quasi-experimental evaluations of teacher salary increases, elimination of school fees, and the expansion of early childhood education in The Gambia; entrepreneurship education for secondary school students in Rwanda; and interventions designed to increase diversity and promote student success in US higher education. Current work in progress includes RCTs on school management in India, foundational numeracy in Malawi, and performance-based financing for education in Cameroon. I am a faculty affiliate of the Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) at MIT, Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA) at UC-Berkeley, and the Institute for Labor Studies (IZA, Bonn).
