Why did you choose economics?
NJ: Markets are omnipresent in our daily lives. Understanding why and how economic decisions are made provides a logical framework through which all other decisions can be made.
Which class in the major has been your favorite and why?
NJ: So far, I'm really enjoying Environmental Economics. It has given me the tools to understand why environmental problems exist and how governments can solve them though alternative signaling and incentives approaches.
Which class outside the major has been your favorite and why?
NJ: American Foreign Policy. In mainstream political discourse, there is often a focus on domestic policy and affairs. Expanding beyond this narrow worldview to understand our role in the rest of the world is truly fascinating.
What is your top piece of advice for students in the economics major?
NJ: Economics involves more math than I thought, especially as you get into the higher levels. Make sure you have a solid foundation of calculus under your belt before moving to upper-level economics.
What is one thing that you recommend students do while at UB?
NJ: College is about academics, it's the entire reason you're here. However, college is also the place where you can actualize your truest identity. I would recommend that all UB students take advantage of all the great events and clubs that are going on and step outside their comfort zones.
