Whether you’re a musician, an aspiring piano technician or someone passionate about the instrument, this program provides practical knowledge that can lead to a fulfilling career or a supplemental income stream.

This hands-on micro-credential focuses on developing expertise in piano tuning, regulation and basic repairs. Students gain valuable skills applicable to concert halls, recording studios, educational institutions and private homes, making it a versatile complement to any music-related academic or career path.

- Musical Skills: Basic pitch recognition and some musical experience are required.
- Interview: Applicants will complete an informal interview with the Music Department’s staff piano technician to assess their musical background and technical aptitude.
Required courses (6 credits)
MUS 499 – Independent Study in Piano Technical Service (2 credits each semester. 3 semesters total)
Each MUS 499 course covers a specific skillset, including:
- Piano tuning
- Regulation
- Basic piano repair
Final assessment
Upon completing the coursework, students will:
1. Create a Summary Document:
- Reflect on their ability to tune, regulate, and repair pianos.
- Serve as a self-assessment integrating the skills acquired.
2. Complete a Final Service:
- Perform common repairs such as key bushing, hammer shaping, or string replacement.
- Address regulation issues to demonstrate regulation skills.
- Aurally tune a piano using a non-visual reference for A440.
