Medical SLP simulation at UB Jacobs School of Medicine

Graduate SLP students completed a high-fidelity clinical simulation experience at the Behling Human Simulation Center at Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

Students participated in three simulation expereinces that are common in acute care settings:

  • worked with standardized patient to conduct a bedside swallow evaluation
  • worked with standardized patient to conduct a communication evaluation
  • worked with an airway manikin to complete a tracheostomy evaluation

Students were able to monitor patient vitals, hear alarms, and troubleshoot in the moment. They also practiced effectively communicating with a nurse, doctor, each other, and patients. These highly valuable experiences prepare our students for medical externship placements in the Spring.

A huge thank you to Laura Roberts, Molly Holcombe, and Kaila Stipancic for organizing and leading this critical educational opportunity for our students!
