The Department of AI and Society is a transdisciplinary department that centers on the crucial need to understand artificial intelligence tools and their impacts to society. The department is jointly based in UB’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the College of Arts and Sciences.

Experiential Learning

Students in the Department of AI and Society gain real-world experience that sets them apart, whether they’re designing ethical algorithms, interning with a public policy group, or studying how AI tools shape global communication.

  • Conduct undergraduate research with faculty leading national AI and society initiatives
  • Intern or collaborate with policy labs and public agencies using AI to address real issues
  • Study abroad and explore how AI is built and regulated across cultures
  • Participate in transdisciplinary capstone projects solving real AI-centered challenges

Career-Focused

AI and Society students graduate with a rare blend of technical fluency and human-centered insight, a combination that opens doors in tech, law, health, education, business, public policy and beyond.

Some students go on to graduate or law school. Others work in UX research, AI ethics consulting, language technology, journalism, government or data analysis. Wherever AI is involved — and that’s nearly everywhere — our students are prepared to lead.
